How much does it cost at a minimum?

  • Cage $70-$100 (usually comes with sticks for birds to perch on, water & bowl bowls)

  • Vet check - $50-$100 (per year) - optional

Minimum space requirements 

For one parakeet, you would need 2 feet length x 1.5 feet width x 1.5 feet depth

What does it like to eat? 

Pet store food, green leafy vegetables like coriander, lettuce & broccoli, fruits like apple in small quantity, sprouted pulses, seeds, cuttlebone

 

How much does it cost on a regular basis? 

Not much, see above for expenses around food & vet

 

Is it lot of work to maintain this pet? 

Not really, but their bottom tray should be cleaned once in 3-4 days and water-food replaced

Does it get stinky? 

Not really, just clean the bottom tray on a regular basis

Needs in the cage 

  • Sticks to perch themselves on

  • Watch them play with their hanging toys endlessly

  • Can feed them from your hand

  • They can be taught to sit on your shoulder & hand

  • It is very easy to make them mate

  • Good education for small kids to know about these birds

Useful tips

  • Ensure you give them cuttlebone in regular intervals for their calcium requirements

  • Get a cage where bottom tray can be removed without opening the cage so that you can clean the tray easily

  • Make sure you put them in a place that gets good ventilation

  • Long lasting companion (12-15 years) - so make sure you are ready for the commitment

  • Loves to play in water
