Why would you consider buying a Green Iguana?

Minimum space requirements

 20 gallon when they are babies, but when they grow over the length of 1 feet move it to a 4 feet x 6 feet x 6 feet

 

What does it like to eat?

Dandelion, Plantain, Mallow, and other leafs and flowers

 

How much does it cost on a regular basis?

$30 - $200

 

Is it a lot of work to maintain this pet?

Yes, Green Iguanas require a lot of maintenance. Clean the enclosure every week. Mist the iguana at least 2 times a day. Check the water bowl/pool everyday.  Young Iguanas need to eat daily, adults can eat every other day.

 

Does it get stinky

No, as long as you spot clean every 3 days.

 

Needs in tank

  • UVB light for 12 hours a day

  • Branches to climb

  • A pool of water

  • Plants or you can just feed it yourself

  • Reptile Carpet as substrate ( there are a lot more substrates but Reptile Carpet is recommended

 

Fun things to know

  • Green Iguanas are good swimmers

  • If threatened a Green Iguana can drop its tail

  • Green Iguanas can survive a fall from 40 - 50 feet ( Don’t test it though!)

 

Useful tips

  • Never hold a Green Iguana by its tail. They can drop it off

  • The cage's temperature should range from 75 degrees Fahrenheit at the cool end to 95 or 100 degrees Fahrenheit at the warm end. At night, the temperature can drop to about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Indoor green iguanas should have a full-spectrum bulb included in their cage setup

  •  Your iguana needs UVB lighting in the form of an artificial source such as a special UVB producing fluorescent tube like an iguana 5.0, a vitalight, or a reptisun fluorescent tube. This UVB producing fluorescent tube should be set up so that it is approximately 10 inches above your iguana
